What is paja toquilla? / ¿Qué es la paja toquilla?

It is a species of palm without a trunk whose fan-shaped leaves emerge from the ground; each plant has wide leaves that reach two or three meters in length.

Es una especie de palma sin tronco cuyas hojas en forma de abanico salen desde el suelo, cada planta tiene hojas anchas que alcanzan los dos y tres metros de largo.

How is the fiber processed? / ¿Cómo se procesa la fibra?

From the plant, the bunches of forming leafs are cut before they open. For this, they must be at least 60 cm long and of a dark green color. The fiber is then beat onto the ground opening the veins and with a brush, the fibers are separated and classified before boiling and bleaching to gain a clear white color. After this the fibers are placed to dry and can then be used to weave different handicrafts.

De la planta se cortan los haces de hojas que se están formando antes de que se abran. Para ello deben tener al menos 60 cm de largo y ser de color verde oscuro. Luego se golpea la fibra en el suelo abriendo las venas y con un cepillo, las fibras se separan y clasifican antes de hervir y blanquear para obtener un color blanco claro. Luego de esto las fibras se ponen a secar y luego se pueden usar para tejer diferentes artesanías.
