What is Fique? / ¿Qué es el Fique?

Fique is a large, low and wide plant with fleshy long leaves, green or blue in color and with thorns at its tips.

Es una planta grande, bajo y ancho con hojas carnosas y largas, de color verde o azules y que poseen espinas en las puntas.

How is the fiber processed? / ¿Cómo se procesa la fibra?

The leaves are cut from the bottom of the trunk with a knife or machete when the plant is approximately one (1) meter tall. This process is carried out every 18 months to guarantee good quality fiber. The next step is to categorize the leaves in good condition to extract the fibers from them. The leaves are then introduced into a rudimentary machine to extract the fibers. Finally, the fibers are submerged in a water tank overnight - the next day they are extended on a rope so that they drain and dry.

Se cortan las hojas de abajo hacia arriba del tronco con un cuchillo o machete cuando la planta tiene aproximadamente un (1) metro de altura. Este proceso se realiza cada 18 meses para garantizar la fibra de buena calidad. El siguiente paso es categorizar las hojas en buen estado para de ellas separar las hojas. Luego son introducidas en una maquina rudimentaria para extraer las fibras. Por ultimo las fibras se sumergen en un tanque con agua durante la noche - al día siguiente se extienden en una cuerda para que se escurran y se sequen.
